After a brief and unspectacular spell as a county cricketer CMJ began his journalistic career as cricket correspondent for the BBC, joining Test Match Special in the early 1970s where he eventually succeeded Brian Johnston. After a spell as editor of the Cricketer, he returned to the BBC as both a TV and radio commentator, combining both roles until he joined the Daily Telegraph. He later became cricket correspondent for The Times, where he remained until 2008. He very sadly lost his battle with cancer in January 2013, just a year after his diagnosis.
