Alan Hill’s biography of Trevor Bailey – The Valiant Cricketer – neatly coincides with the 60th anniversary of his sterling deeds against Australia in the first Ashes series of the television age in England. Memories of Bailey’s influence with bat and ball in 1953 will be rekindled in the upcoming Ashes series this summer. The hailed boy champion at Dulwich College was acknowledged as an international cricketer as being second only to Ian Botham as England’s finest post-war allrounder.
